Caring for your silver

Caring for SilverCaring for your Fingerprints piece:

Cleaning and caring for your Fingerprints silver jewellery is easy to do if you follow a few basic steps. With a little care and maintenance, your silver jewellery should always shine.

When you purchase silver jewellery, the first thing to remember is that silver is a relatively soft metal. Even the heaviest silver will bend or break if enough force is added to it. Silver can be prone to scratching, try to minimize this by storing it correctly in the pouch provided and treating it with care.

NB: As with any jewellery we do not recommend wearing your piece when showering, sleeping or exercising.

Storing your Fingerprints Jewellery:

Your Fingerprints jewellery should always be kept in the Fingerprints pouch supplied. Not only will this keep other jewellery from rubbing the silver (possibly causing scratches), it will protect it from the air, which causes tarnishing. (Tarnishing is caused by oxidization and moisture in the air. It first appears as a golden hue on the silver, but then turns black).

Cleaning your Fingerprints pendant*

Silver jewellery should always be cleaned with a soft cotton or flannel cloth. Synthetic materials can cause scratching.

For quick cleaning of silver, such as removing makeup or light dirt, use a small amount of liquid detergent or soap to about a half cup of warm water. Using your cloth, wipe the solution the jewellery, rinse under clean warm water, and dry thoroughly.

To remove tarnish or heavier dirt buildup, you will need to use special silver cleaner. There are usually several paste silver cleaning brands available from local supermarkets or hardware shops.

To use a paste, the best method is to scoop a small amount on your cloth and gently rub it onto the pendant. Allow the paste to dry then use another clean cloth to wipe the excess away. You can also rinse the piece under warm water and dry thoroughly.

You can also purchase a silver cleaning cloth, which has anti-tarnish ingredients.

As some pieces of Fingerprints jewellery may have been lightly antiqued we do not recommend using liquid dip solutions (this does not apply to cufflinks, charms pendants or silver leaves as these products have not been antiqued).

*These instructions relate to the cleaning of the Solid Silver Pendants only, liquid dips may be used for the sterling silver accessories.

The more you wear your jewellery, the less you will have to clean it. With proper care and storage, your Fingerprints jewellery will bring you many years of wear and enjoyment.

Caring for your silver leaf:

Your leaf is a fragile piece made from 99.9% pure silver. Hard knocks or pressure being applied to the leaf may cause damage. We recommend storing the leaf in the pouch provided and avoiding any items being placed on top of the leaf when in storage.  When cleaning your leaf rub very gently with a soft cloth and a small amount of silver polish. In order to help prevent tarnishing ensure that your leaf is stored in the fingerprints pouch when not being worn.
